Why I'm pulling back on content and going all-in on product

For the past 6 months I had a full-time videographer following me around making videos (his name is Don and he’s insanely talented).

We’d post short-form videos about random things, sometimes related to my startup ShareWillow, but most of the time not related to ShareWillow at all.

The idea was to get people bought into the people behind the brand with the goal that they’d one day have a need to check out our product.

I actually love making content and I’m completely okay with putting myself out there and being cringe.

Creating daily content takes an enormous amount of time. You have to create a content schedule, come up with new ideas, plan, film, and then do all of the post production editing and post.

This was consuming a majority of my time and brain capacity.

My main job and highest priority is being the founder ShareWillow, a seed stage startup that just raised $6.5m to build the world’s first profit sharing platform.

And while I love creating content and fully believe that building an audience will help with distribution, I felt that this was pulling me away from building a world-class product. And that has to come first.

My focus for the next 6 months is going to be recruiting a world-class team of product designers and software engineers. I am going to lead them as head of product while I go super deep talking to customers and defining exactly what a profit sharing platform looks like.

I will revisit our content strategy later this summer once we have our product further along. And I’m super excited to do that.
